HIP REPLACEMENT

A total hip replacement is exactly what it sounds like—a surgery to replace a natural hip joint that has worn out or been damaged with an artificial one. There are several surgical approaches that generally follow the same path: your surgeon makes an incision near the hip joint, carefully extracts the diseased or damaged bone and cartilage, then inserts an artificial hip and secures it in place.

Surgical approaches

There are a number of surgical approachs to the hip. The two most common approaches for replacing your hip joint today are:

Direct anterior approach

Posterior approach
